Sophie Pornschlegel currently works as a Director of Studies at Europe Jacques Delors, a Brussels-based think tank and the third think tank called after Jacques Delors name, together with the Institut Jacques Delors in Paris and the Jacques Delors Centre in Berlin.
Sophie is also a Policy Fellow with her former think tank, Das Progressive Zentrum in Berlin. There, her expertise area includes EU policy, social cohesion, and the future of democracy. She participated in projects such as the EP elections project (2024), Dialogue on Europe (2016-2017), Daring New Spaces (2021), the Democracy Lab (2017-2019), and co-launched the Innocracy Conference in 2017.
in 2023, Sophie’s first book was published in German: “Am Ende der gewohnten Ordnung: Warum wir Macht neu denken müssen” (Droemer, 2023). (“At the end of the regular order: Why we need to rethink power”), which analysis why our (Machiavellian) conception of political power is unfit to solve the challenges we face and how we can move towards an more progressive understanding of democratic power.
In 2022 and 2024, Sophie was a visiting lecturer at Sciences Po Paris, where she taught a seminar on EU democracy to second year Bachelor students. She previously taught as a seminar on EU comparative politics at Free University Berlin (FU) (2018/2019) and a summer course of Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes on EU-UK relations post-Brexit (2018). She also regularly speaks at conferences and holds workshops, e.g. at universities, for EU institutions, German federal ministries and regional parliaments.
Previously, Sophie worked as a Senior Policy Analyst at the European Policy Centre in Brussels (2019-2023). There, she led the Connecting Europe project in cooperation with Stiftung Mercator. She works on democracy and the rule of law, Eu politics and institutions and Franco-German relations. In 2020/2021, Sophie was awarded a fellowship with the Charlemagne Prize Academy, where she researches EU solidarity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also was a board member for the grassroots think tank for European and Foreign Policy Polis180 (2015-2018), where she worked on the establishment of the international network of the think tank with its European partners (“Open Think Tank Network”) and co-founded a programme area working on EU-UK relations. She worked as a public affairs consultant in Berlin, (2014-2017) in the European Commission Representation to Germany (2013-2014) and for a Labour MP in Westminster (2012-2013).
Sophie’s commentaries are published in various media outlets, e.g. Deutschlandfunk Kultur, ZEIT Online, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagzeitung, taz - die Tageszeitung and Tagesspiegel, Euractiv. She is also a regular guest on various TV and radio broadcasts, such as for BBC, Reuters, France24, Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle and national outlets such as FranceInfo, ARD (Tagesschau) and ZDF (ZDF Aspekte, Maybrit Illner), ORF.
Sophie holds a double degree in European Affairs (M.Sc.) from Sciences Po Paris and the London School of Economics (LSE), as well as an interdisciplinary B.A. from Sciences Po Paris. She also studied at King’s College London for her exchange year.
Sophie speaks French, German and English fluently and has basic knowledge of Dutch, Spanish and Italian. She grew up in Tours, Munich and Freiburg-im-Breisgau.

Sie kritisiert das regressive und machiavellistische Machtverständnis in der Politik und setzt sich für ein progressiveres und demokratisches Verständnis von politischer Macht ein, um die Krisen der Gegenwart besser lösen zu können.
Von 2019-2023 war Sophie Senior Policy Analyst am Brüsseler Think Tank European Policy Centre und Projektleiterin von Connecting Europe in Kooperation mit der Stiftung Mercator. Dort arbeitete Sie an verschiedenen europapolitischen Themen: EU-Rechtsstaatlichkeit und Demokratie, deutsch-französische Beziehungen und Zivilgesellschaft. Sophie war 2020/2021 Fellow bei der Karlspreis Academy mit einem Forschungsprojekt zu EU-Solidarität während der Corona-Pandemie.
2022 und 2024 war sie Lehrbeauftragte bei Sciences Po Paris für ein Seminar zu EU-Demokratie für Bachelor-Studierende im 4. Semester. Im Wintersemester 2018/2019 war Sophie Gastdozentin an der Freien Universität zu Berlin (FU) in vergleichender Politikwissenschaft und im Sommer 2018 Dozentin bei der Sommerakademie der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes zu den EU-UK Beziehungen nach dem Brexit. Sie spricht und moderiert bei Konferenzen und Workshops, u.a. für Universitäten, EU-Institutionen, Bundesministerien und Landtage.
Sophie war Vorstandsmitglied beim grassroots-Thinktank für Europa- und Außenpolitik Polis180 (2015-2018). Dort hat sie das internationale Netzwerk (“Open Think Tank Network”) und den Programmbereichs „Post Brexit Europe“ mit aufgebaut.
